Party Bus Rules in Texas: Drinking, Age Limits and Etiquette

Here's what Texas law says about drinking on a party bus, the age rules, and the house rules most party bus companies follow.

Can you drink on a party bus in Texas?

Quick answer: yes, for passengers 21 and over.

Texas law generally prohibits open containers of alcohol in the passenger area of a vehicle on a public road. It makes an exception for passengers in the passenger area of a motor vehicle designed, maintained or used primarily to carry people for compensation, including a bus, taxicab or limousine (Texas Penal Code § 49.031). The exception covers passengers, not the driver.

Age rules

  • Only guests 21 and over may have alcohol. Texas law generally prohibits anyone under 21 from having alcohol, with narrow exceptions. On our rides, nobody under 21 may have it.
  • Groups with guests under 21 can still ride; the ride is alcohol-free for them, and prom rides are alcohol-free for everyone.
  • Most companies ask a parent or guardian to be the booking contact for groups under 18.

What's usually not allowed on a party bus

  • Smoking and vaping.
  • Glass bottles and glassware brought on board, which can break on a moving bus.
  • Glitter, confetti and anything taped to the walls.
  • Illegal drugs.
  • Leaning out of windows, opening doors while moving or standing on seats.
  • More passengers than the vehicle is rated for.

These are common company rules, not laws. Check your rental agreement.

How to avoid cleaning and damage fees

  • Use cans and plastic cups with lids.
  • Keep food simple and bag your trash before you get off.
  • Tell the driver right away if something spills.

Tipping the driver

Tipping is up to you. With us, gratuity isn't included or required, so tip based on your experience. Many groups tip 15 to 20% of the fare. See how much to tip a party bus driver.
